International Overdose Awareness Day

Today memorializes all the lives lost to drug overdoses. International Overdose Awareness Day is a global event that aims to raise awareness of overdose while reducing the stigma felt by families and friends when a loved one dies from an overdose.

Today is also about doing our part to alleviate the pain and suffering overdoses cause. From this day forward, we need to minimize overdoses in every possible way. There is a line that must be drawn in the sand as way of saying 144 deaths each day—no, any number of deaths each day—is simply unacceptable.

Overdose deaths are entirely preventable which is why today is also about informing and educating parents, friends, family members, co-workers and entire communities about how to watch for signs of the potential for overdose. How can you talk to your children? What do you need to know?

Our website contains resources for parents and grandparents about alcohol and other drugs. There are “how to talk” kits, fact sheets, awareness guides and much more. You can find the list of resources, here.
